Abstract


Purpose: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe unilateral paroxysmal, lacinating facial pain. The diagnosis of TN is based on several characteristic clinical features. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical manifestations of TN patients treated at the Department of Oral Medicine, Chosun University Dental Hospital.

Materials and Methods: A total of 56 patients with TN from January 2008 to December 2009 was included for this study. We investigated the gender, age and systemic diseases of patients, the sites of pain, the methods and duration of treatment and the course that comes to department of oral medicine. 89.3% of the patients were over 40 years of age and 64.3% were women.

Results: Patients with TN had mainly diseases of the circulatory system and endocrine diseases. The two most frequently involved trigeminal nerve brandches were mandibular (53.6%) and maxillary (32.1%) branches. 94.6% of the patients were treated by medication and 92.8% of the patients controlled the pain within 6 months. And we could know that 32.1% of the patients were comes to the Department of Oral Medicine within 2 months after occurrence of the symptom and 89.3% of the patients were comes to the Department of Oral Medicine via other clinics or hospitals and other Department of Chosun Univerisity Dental Hospital.
